Galapagos: A National History Guide
Published in Hardcover by University of Calgary Press (May, 1994)
Author: Michael H. Jackson
Average review score:

The one book needed when travelling to the galapagos
I just recently returned from the Galapagos Islands, and the book that guided me throughout my journey was this book by M.H. Jackson. Very easy to find the animal you are looking, and also helps to discover more creatures to look for. Helped explain things further from what the guides had said. Also helped me in answering many people's questions about different creatures. A Great book! A must for all travelers to the galapagos in search of unique wildlife.

Undoubtedly the best overview of "Darwin's Islands".
I am a biologist that has been working in the Galapagos as a Naturalist leading tours there for the last 6 years. Michael Jackson's book is the "Bible" for the beginning naturalist and certainly more than adequate for the casual "ecotourist". Jackson covers all major aspects of the history, geology, ecology, and biology of the islands. In the "biology" section, he gives a clear, concise, but thorough group-by-group treatment of all major taxa including plants, reptiles, land and sea birds, mammals, and a brief section covering marine life. While there are other guidebooks available, none come close to the accuracy, clarity of presentation, and logical format of this book. Of particular usefulness are the many photos, tables, and graphs which provide a visual representation of many of the topics discussed and a synthesis of large amounts of data.

Games for Actors and Non--Actors
Published in Paperback by Routledge (July, 2002)
Authors: Augusto Boal and Adrian Jackson
Average review score:

A valuable introduction to the Theatre of the Oppressed
This text represents a valuable introduction to the theories and practice of Augusto Boal. GFA, unlike its predecessor the Theatre of the Oppressed, contains practical exercises as well as an introduction to the important theoretical work of Boal. Boal's major innovations (such as Forum Theatre and Image Theatre) are introduced, discussed, and illustrated with examples, thus effectively allowing the reader to enter into the dialogue of using and refining the techniques. I would recommend this to any performer, artist, educator, or theatre worker who is unfamiliar with the work of Boal, and seeks new methods of understanding and transforming practice, and empowering both audience and participants.

Augustus Boal for all ages
Definitely a must-have in all drama classes. Don't recycle the same old exercises which have nothing to do with the world around us - the work of Boal is accessible and important to students of the theater of all ages.

The Ghost Boat.
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (January, 1969)
Author: Jacqueline. Jackson
Average review score:

Ghost of a drowned fisherman
The ghost of a drowned fisherman rows his boat across the moonpath by night, leaving it waterlogged among the lake weeds by day... Or was it only imagination that propelled the boat? The four RIchards children and their friend Kenny frighten themselves nearly out of their wits trying to find the answer to this question. They also have a very good time, as will the reader who stays with them right through the Chamber of Horrors, featuring a set of pickled tonsils (taken from inside of book)

I may be a bit nostalgic in my rating...
I read this book about 30 years ago. I enjoyed the tale of this group of friends and their storytelling gatherings. I recommended this to my stepson when he couldn't find something to interest him, (he doesn't like to read), and he truly enjoyed this story too. Great tale for 4-6 grade readers.

The Greaseless Guide to Car Care
This is a great book if you know next to nothing about cars but you own one. Very well explained and not a struggle to read for the beginner. Gave me a handle on terms and what they mean and how to find your way around the repair shop. Should be curriculum for life skills class for everyone.

car care for novices and the uninformed
I'm sorry to see this book out of print. I purchased copies for each of my children and myself. Jackson clearly explains the essentials you need to know in order to talk to your mechanic and understand what is important and what is not. A must for those of us who just want our cars to run with as little personal involvement as possible.

Gurps Wwii: Hand of Steel
Published in Paperback by Steve Jackson Games (March, 2002)
Authors: Shawn A. Fisher and Steve Jackson Games
Average review score:

Accurate, succinct, and useful
If you are looking for a book that covers the special forces of WWII and how to incorporate them into the GURPS game system, this is it.

Mr. Fisher has done an excellent job of maintaining both historical accuracy and game integrity. The writing style flows well and makes for an easy and informative book. For those of you who are not experts on WWII, this book may even prove educational :-)

Size doesn't matter...
GURPS has long been known for the attention to detail that it displays in its world books - thankfully GURPS WW2: Hand of Steel lives up to the pedigree.

Don't expect a wide range of detail in this book - it is one of SJ Game's new "mini-book" supplements. If you want the full low down on World War II and its participants, buy the core book and the other full size releases in the line.

What you do get though is a concise, intelligent, and historically accurate portrayal of the "special forces" in the conflict that spawned the modern understanding of that term. Everything from Wehrmacht combat engineers to US Marine Raider battalions - you are not limited by theatre or nationality, although the ommission of Italian special forces (extremely minor though they were in WW2) is a noticeable ommission.

Not that that effects the way the book works. If you want a Tech Level 6 military orientated campaign source, this book is essential. Games following the Real World WW2, Alternate Earths campaigns, even contemporary and near future special forces orientated games will benefit from the information in this book.

I am thoroughly satisified that I bought it - a great gaming aid and a good historical read. Nicely done.

The Handbook to Alternatives to Chemical Medicine

A God Send to controlling your own health.
My sister and I met the doctor in 1975 the year I arrived in CA. Went there for a physical problem. Were impressed and purchased the book right then and there. We have tried many of the cures, etc., and have found them to work. My daughter swears by it also. Please keep printing this book for all those coming in the future that will need it.

The best book of its type I am aware of.
I purchased an original edition in the early 80's and have relied on it for simple remedies. My friends have conquered such things as kidney stones and migranes from utilizing some of the remedies suggested. I recently mis-placed my copy and that caused me a great deal of stress. I felt like I had lost an important weapon in my attempts to stay healthy and well. I can not express the true joy of knowing that I can get another copy so I can feel whole and fully armed again!

Handbook to Happiness and You: A Spiritual Clinic
Published in Paperback by Charles R Solomon (December, 1991)
Authors: Charles R. Solomon, Nikolo Balkanski, and Basil Jackson
Average review score:

Where does the cross of Christ fit into your life?
Dr. Solomon leades the reader from the milk to the meat of the Word of God. Section I leads the reader to an understanding and intimate relationship with Christ. This is a oneness with our Lord and Savior. Section II asks the counselor and/or church leaders, "Where is the Cross?" How/ where does the Cross of Christ fit into my/your program? I Corinthians 1:18. What am I teaching? What is my/your church teaching? Does it fit with the description that Dr. Solomon gives on pages 165-170? II Corinthians 6:17-18. Are we willing to take a stand? As I read this book, I sensed a care and concern of Dr. Solomon, a care and concern to teach the whole gospel, to encourage the rest of us to take a stand. We are to take a stand on the complete Word of God.

I just finished this book for the third time.
this is the best growth book I have encountered. Every paragraph is noteworthy.

Harlemworld: Doing Race and Class in Contemporary Black America
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (Trd) (June, 2003)
Authors: John L., Jr Jackson and Jackson Jr.
Average review score:

A multi-faceted examination of new Harlem lifestyles
Harlem is the center of black culture and history: Harlem World reveals a probe of the region which uses interviews with a cross-section of Harlem residents to offer new insights into the lives and attitudes of modern Harlem dwellers. What evolves is a multi-faceted examination of new Harlem lifestyles.

Insightful and beautifully written
Jackson's Harlemworld examines Harlem, both as an actual place and as a mythical "hyperscape," to assess the ways in which concepts of racial and socioeconomic identity are conceived, articulated, and performed in contemporary America (19). For Jackson, Harlem is a site that illuminates the ways that people employ multi-layered ideas of racial belonging, being, and doing in their everyday lives. Here, people "do" race and class; for Harlemites--residents of the actual Harlem and African diasporic subjects who inhabit Harlem as an imaginary home--black identity functions not as a static, coherent essence but rather as a set of "skills and cultural practices" that people act out in distinct ways (63).

Jackson's theory of social identity situates itself somewhere in between (or decidedly outside of) recent academic debates about culture and identity. His notion of performative social identity works through and against Pierre Bordieu's habitus, Michel Foucault's discourse analysis, and Judith Butler's performativity. Jackson's field research--involving interviews with both long-time and new residents of the neighborhood--uncovers a community in which black people move between socioeconomic echelons, building and maintaining both complex social networks and complex notions of what constitutes blackness.

Harlemworld is a refreshing and extraordinary addition to a growing discourse on identity and everyday life in America. Jackson's fascinating prose allows Harlemworld and its readers to navigate a complex field of theoretical formulations with grace. It will easily get added onto sociology, anthropology and cultural studies reading lists, as it makes possible new and interesting readings of race and class in this country.

House of Hades (Fighting Fantasy, No 10)
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (July, 1985)
Authors: Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone
Average review score:

A frighteningly good gamebook
... So begins your adventure in House of Hades, Steve Jackon's excellent Fighting Fantasy horror gamebook. The entire adventure has you trying to survive the horrors of this vile mansion, desperate to find a way out. However, not all that you encounter will be evil... The gamebook is well written, with many encounters that are delightfully scary; so much so that there is a "FEAR" score to keep track of. Each time you get frightened, you add points to your fear score. If it reaches a certain amount (one roll of a die plus 6, determined before you begin), then you are frightened to death, and the adventure is over. All in all, House of Hades is one of the better Fighting Fantasy gamebooks. The ending even provides a surprise twist.

Read "House of Hades" for a different kind of scare
Of all the Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, House of Hades is unique in two main ways. First of all, it takes place in the present time and "real" world: no dragons to fight or spaceships to fly. Second, it is based on genuinely creepy stuff ala "Amityville Horror" and "The Exorcist": grotesque demons, fanatic cultists and dark rituals. The plot and story itself are scary: putting it in a gamebook with you in the middle elevates it to another level! Don't read this one alone, even with the lights on!
